Assassination of Nizam al-Mulk Fig 1.

The assassination of the great chancellor Nizam al-Mulk in 1092 that triggered the collapse of the empire and, therefore, Khayyam's world. Drawn for the author by the British artist Bob Moulder from a partially defaced painting of the early 1300s. The artist has added as background the mountains and river of today's town of Sahneh in Kurdish western Iran where the event took place. Copyright Hazhir Teimourian.
